AMA - verified This is Dermot Kennedy and I'm hosting my first Reddit AMA around my new album 'Sonder.' Ask me anything!

Hi everyone,

My name’s Dermot Kennedy and I’m an Irish singer/songwriter who started off busking in the streets of Dublin over 10 years ago. I’m constantly influenced by so many different kinds of music, from Bon Iver to Drake and Taylor Swift (you may have recently come across my cover of ‘Anti-Hero’ on this very channel). When I’m not on stage, you’ll always find me with a book in hand, hitting up a coffee shop or watching/playing sports (I’m a Manchester United fan, don’t judge me).

My second studio album 'Sonder' is out now, and it revolves around the realisation that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own. I am very proud of it and hope more than anything that there’s something you can connect with in these songs. I can’t wait to play them for you live on the ‘Sonder’ tour next year and can’t believe I’m headlining Madison Square Garden! Hope to see you at a show or surprise busk soon!

I'd give an example, but I can't think of any! I'm looking for some of the best solo careers out there, and to learn more about artists than I know now. Have at it!

music streaming Seasonal reminder that sia has a Xmas album of all original songs. My family listens every year and it's one of the only Xmas albums I enjoy.

5.3k Upvotes

Sia is one of the only artists I know of that has an original Xmas album. It's great as a lot of the old xmas songs bring up not the best memories. Also Sia's songs aren't religious which is awesome. I'm not affiliated in any way, just want to share some music that I like.

discussion The soundtrack to the 2000 Jim Carey film Me, Myself and Irene had no business being so good.

This soundtrack is the only physical CD I still listen to because it’s not on any of my streaming services. Pete Yorn, Foo Fighters and Ellis Paul are my favorite tracks.

I only saw the movie once like 20 years ago but they totally nailed this album.

1 Breakout - Foo Fighters
2 Do It Again - Smash Mouth
3 Deep Inside Of You - Third Eye Blind
4 Totalimmortal - The Offspring
5 The World Ain't Slowin' Down - Ellis Paul
6 Any Major Dude Will Tell You - Wilco
7 Only a Fool Would Say That - Ivy
8 Can't Find The Time To Tell You - Hootie And The Blowfish
9 Bodhisattva - The Brian Setzer Orchestra
10 Bad Sneakers - The Push Stars
11 Reelin' in the Years - Marvelous 3
12 Strange Condition - Pete Yorn
13 Barrytown - Ben Folds Five
14 Razor Boy - Billy Goodrum
15 Where He Can Hide - Tom Wolfe

To everyone waiting for Spotify Wrapped... you can check your music stats all year round.
Link: https://freeyourmusic.com/stats

And if you use another service than Spotify, you also get a chance to see your personal listening stats. Currently supporting Apple Music and YouTube Music, but planning to include other services too.

Natural Language Playlist is essentially DALL-E for playlists! It uses deep neural embeddings to generate a playlist of songs to satisfy your musical itches. "Sentence to playlist" is an idea I've been theory-crafting and building for a while now, and I'm excited to share my results with the entire internet. At any rate, go ahead and try it out yourself!

Edit: Website crashed at 6:25. Back up in 15 minutes. Too many requests. Love this energy and bought more CPU time from my host.

Edit 2: We're back!

Edit 3: The highly coveted back button has arrived. You guys wanted a back button, you GOT a back button!!

discussion Terrible Songs With Good Hooks

What do you think are songs that are pretty awful but have great hooks that are wasting behind awful lyrics and/or music? I find some music is super catchy but I hate the track in general oftentimes.

One pick for me is (surprisingly) Katy Perry's ET. The hook is actually really catchy and distinctive - the lyrics and production are just cheesy and unappealing (this is a cardinal sin of Katy Perry's lesser singles). It's a waste of some pretty infectious music.
