Batman: "If you murder a murderer, the number of murderers stays the same."

Me: "But what if you murder two murderers?"

This is why logic and ethics are separate disciplines in the structure of ancient Greek philosophy.

6

u/xalorous 8d ago

The beatings will continue until morale is improved.

10

u/ToanGreenlow 8d ago

We laugh but this is true. If there was 10 people in a room, and 1 of those 10 people kept trying to kill the other 9, the only way to get peace is either for that 10th person to kill everyone else, or for the other 9 people to kill the 10th

9

u/kadsmald 8d ago

Apparently you’re just supposed to let #10 kill everyone so you can feel morally superior for not killing #10🤷‍♂️

5

u/yamashinu1 8d ago

Or, you could have an imagination that lets you conceive of options that aren’t killing. There are bears all over this planet that would kill me if given the chance. I have never killed a bear. Yet I am safe from bears. There are options that aren’t killing, you just have to believe they exist.

4

u/ToanGreenlow 8d ago

Oh there's options for sure, but sometimes, you have to fight, if you want peace. Like in my example, the only way peace is going to be achieved in that room is if #10 dies or everyone else dies.

But the world is rarely so black and white, and many times, peace can be achieved differently.

3

u/yamashinu1 8d ago

Classic mixup…I read “only option” and interpreted it literally as “the only option”, which was silly considering that “literally” literally means figuratively now. I’m gonna take a hit of Derrida and curl up with some acid until this whole thing blows over.

It is not politic in the commonwealth of nature to preserve virginity. Loss of virginity is rational increase and there was never virgin got till virginity was first lost. 41

u/Quotes_League 8d ago

the US military budget compared to GDP is 1/3 of what it was during the height of the Vietnam war, and about 40% less than during the height of Iraq and Afghanistan.

US spending per student isn't amazing, but that's not because it's pumped into the US military, which by the way, subsidizes other countries abilities to fund education instead of the military so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

20

u/TheDungeonCrawler 8d ago

Those numbers don't mean a lot when you don't provide context, such as what percentage of the US budget military spending consists of. The US defense budget (that being the federal budget and discretionary spending) accounts for about 1/3 of US spending with 10 percent of the federal budget being defense and half of discretionary spending. The total is about 778 billion dollars annually. That is a very large amount of money. We also regularly hear about the poor quality of equipment (meaning the US isn't getting its money's worth) and we regularly overspend on our contracts due to aggressive lobbying from bigwigs in the military hardware industry. With a bit of competence and oversight, we could slim down our defense budget massively and have better quality equipment than we do now. But expecting competence from a grab bag of decent people and corrupt assholes is too high a threshold. We need to be holding our politicians accountable.

Even if teachers are in fact nothing better than babysitters as some delusional parents think...

If you pay your babysitter $10/hr, and a classroom has 20 kids that should mean teachers should be paid $200/hr to babysit. Maybe apply bulk pricing and take a ridiculous 50% off that and its 100/hr to babysit for what 6 hrs a day? Now 600/day.... okay that's a bit high, let's round that down to 500/day for... reasons. 500x5=2500/wk. Not counting sports and tutoring hours. 2500×52=130k/yr...? Before taxes ofc.

....and that's at $10/hr, I charged 10/hr when I was 14 in 1999. 20 years of inflation and a college degree means I'm lowballing hard.

34

u/TwitchDanmark 8d ago

By that logic babysitters should also get paid per kid, and would be making upwards of like what, $50 an hour?

Not opposed to the idea, but the rest of society would just adjust to it, and we’ll be in pretty much the same spot

21

u/ButeoJamaicensis- 8d ago

I just watched Apocalypse Now for the first time and I gotta say, as awful as it is, the crazy guy does have a point. If you're going to drop bombs for that sake of peace then you may as well just drop the bomb because having a long protracted war only serves to create more suffering for both sides over a longer period of time with a less certain outcome... Of course, the counterpoint is the same, if war justifies horrors like that then it's best avoided all together.

Eh. Drop enough bombs and you'll eventually have peace. Just ask Germany and Japan about that.

68

u/spaghettiThunderbalt 8d ago

Peace through superior firepower.

60

u/13YearsInCollege 8d ago

People can talk as much shit as they want about the nukes we dropped on Japan, but it is unquestionable that millions of military and civilians lives would have been lost in a ground war in Japan vs the 200k that died in the attacks.

Not to marginalize the Japanese lives lost, and many by absolutely horrific means as they died of radiation sickness, but it was a means to an end.

Did we really need to drop a second bomb after Hiroshima? Not sure and that is probably a different debate.

24

u/nagurski03 8d ago

Even after dropping the second bomb, there was still an attempted military coup where soldiers tried to kidnap the Emperor to prevent him from surrendering.

Japan was kind of wild.

20

u/Quin1617 8d ago

Did we really need to drop a second bomb after Hiroshima? Not sure and that is probably a different debate.

Isn’t the reason we drooped a 2nd bomb(and nearly a 3rd iirc) was because of Japan’s reluctance to surrender?

I might be way off as History wasn’t my thing in school.

20

u/13YearsInCollege 8d ago

I think you're right, but I've heard rationale that 3 days was not long enough for them to really assess what had happened. Again, I think it is really nuanced and there is probably a little bit of truth on both sides of the argument.

11

u/Solo_Wing__Pixy 8d ago

This viewpoint, I would argue, is correct. There is extensive historical debate still going on this topic and both theories have historical evidence to support their claims. It’s a highly nuanced question.

This is actually not really true — Area Bombing (combing that’s indiscriminate and targets civilians) has been proven ineffective time and time again. It didn’t work against Britain, and it didn’t work against Germany or Japan. The reason Germany and Japan lost is for a multitude of reasons, but bombing civilians or indiscriminately is completely ineffective. That’s why many militaries around the world have moved away from that practice. Targeted bombing is much more effective.

Maybe you were just being flippant, but I thought I’d add a response.

Kinda thought the same, but I tried looking it up and I think the same image has just been edited a bunch over time. There’s an article with it from 9 years ago with what appears to be a less filtered version and it looks more natural.

I thought it was just me. The writing on the sign almost looks edited in.

Only an American could think that. 30 years ago Europe had to fight for its freedom from the Germans.

Weren’t they bombing police stations and recruiting offices? My memory is a little hazy.

Bombing to create peace. Need to get rid of the non-peaceful people to get to that sweet sweet peace.

Didnt the NV government "dissappear" some 1 million SV after the war ended? Gotta wonder if they would have prefered the bombs to whatever end awaited them..
