This is my 98 year old WW2 Grandfather. He served in the US Navy as a gunner and jazz musician in the Navy Jazz Band. He wasn’t just a grandfather to me. He was a friend.

We laid him to rest yesterday and made sure he received full honors.

We buried my ww2 navy vet grandpa in 2001. Gun salute and all that jazz. He was at Pearl Harbor when it went down and then served as an AA gunner in the Pacific. Definitely had a little ptsd but he was cool as hell... let me drive his golf cart around while he rode shotgun with his Arnold Palmer and Canadian Club.

Salute to your grandfather and sorry for your loss o7

I love it. And thank you. He was healthy and sharp up until the very end. And better memory than me. I love history and I knew he liked talking about different aspects of his life.

Thank you again and for sharing your experience

They really were. In the case of his funeral, he paid for an open bar and food and nobody knew. That’s the type of guy he was

The greatest generation. "The most recent survey by the Department of Veterans Affairs was taken in 2018 which showed there were 568,344 surviving WW2 veterans in the United States. They have predicted that as of 2022, there will be 174,387 veterans still alive." RIP...Slow salute. Sorry for your loss OP.

What instrument did he play? My dad was also a jazz musician in WWII

Clarinet mostly I think. Maybe Sax from time to time. Years back we were able to get sone of the recordings and we had to “remastered”

Sadly I’m not sure where my copy is but I know a few relatives have it and ill DM you if ya want!

That’s so cool.

I would LOVE to hear it! My DMs are open.

My dad was a jazz guitarist and played in the army band. He’s been gone since 2013. Much respect to your grandfather, I am sorry for your loss.

ETA: This is my main account, sorry for any confusion! The DMs are open on this one!

My gpa served in WWII and the Korean war. He turned a 100 this year. I bet they had some good times back in the day. He had so many cool stories.
