You came in that thing?

104

u/luckd0ut Oct 01 '22

Yeah, surprising but I'm braver then you think

15

u/3-DMan Oct 01 '22

NICE, come on!

24

u/MadManMorbo Oct 01 '22

She’s really good with her hands….

8

u/Stereo_Panic Oct 01 '22

Things you can say about your buddy's spaceship but not his girlfriend.

6

u/Thuper-Man Oct 01 '22

Luke, at that speed, do you think we can pull out in time?

8

u/dern_the_hermit Oct 01 '22

"Just like Beggar's Canyon back home."

What Legends won't tell you is that Beggar's Canyon is a three-way sex position.

3

u/SleepyBoii04 Mandalorian Oct 01 '22

Wait actually???

3

u/dern_the_hermit Oct 01 '22

Yeah, it was from the 1995 anthology novel Tales from the Bothan Fetish Club, reprinted in 1997.

No, not actually, I'm just screwin' around...

164

u/creditspread Oct 01 '22

What car are you driving, OP? Didn’t know cars have heads-up-displays. Very cool.

86

u/luckd0ut Oct 01 '22

I have a 2022 Silverado 3500hd. I have a large 5th wheel camper that I tow and live in with it ( 2017 Heartland 4250). I never thought I would care about the HUD but I really do like it

13

u/AustralianWi-Fi Oct 01 '22

that is a LONG boi

11

u/creditspread Oct 01 '22

I like my Tesla and all, but it doesn’t have a HUD. Or FSD haha.

20

u/durrtyurr Oct 01 '22

FSD is a scam, it's good that you saved the 10k dollars.

3

u/memesforbismarck Oct 01 '22

Which model costs 10k more for the FSD? We recently bought a Model 3 and the autopilot only costs 3500€ more, same goes for the model Y

9

u/greatersteven Oct 01 '22

FSD is different from auto pilot.

-2

u/memesforbismarck Oct 01 '22

What is the difference?

I looked FSD up and I only found that it refers to the autopilot system in tesla cars

5

u/WhoCanTell Oct 01 '22

Autopilot is free on every car and is a combination of traffic-aware cruise control and auto-steering on highways and freeways. So you pick a lane, engage it, and it stays in that lane, maintains speed and slows down for traffic, steers for you and steers/slows down to avoid collisions. It still requires to to have your hands on the wheel to take over at any time, but it takes a lot of the stress out of driving long distances. I recently used it for about 2000 miles out of a 3000 mile road trip and it made a huge difference in daily exhaustion. You still have to pay attention, but you're not as concerned with the little stuff.

You can pay extra for enhanced autopilot, which can change lanes on demand to pass people and do some limited self-navigation on freeways, from on-ramp to off-ramp.

FSD is what it says. You pick a destination - surface streets or highways - and it drives there, or at least attempts to. It's very much still a work in progress. It was maybe worth it when it was $6000, not worth it at whatever it is now. $15000 I think?

1

u/memesforbismarck Oct 01 '22

Ok very interesting. Where I live it is quite different. Without an additional fee you get all the regular assistents like keeping the speed, for 3500€ you get the autopilot which can drive you from A to B and some minor gimmicks. For 7500€ you can get traffic light and stop sign identification and the city assistant which isnt allowed in our country yet

3

u/greatersteven Oct 01 '22

Auto pilot is just lane assist, cruise control, etc. It won't do start to end driving and you shouldn't try to. FSD (in beta) is to become actual self driving at some point, ideally, when finished.

1

u/KickAffsandTakeNames Oct 01 '22

Oh, so you only got scammed out of 3500? I guess that's better 🤣

-1

u/memesforbismarck Oct 01 '22

If it is worth to someone, why shouldnt he buy it?!

0

u/KickAffsandTakeNames Oct 01 '22

Because it is not only a scam, but a dangerous one that makes other drivers unwitting participants in what is functionally an open beta program which has already killed people. Being happy with a scam purchase doesn't make it less of a scam, quite the contrary: it means you got scammed extra hard.

But that's not the point, and I'm not interested in arguing about it. The point is that someone said "this is a scam, it's good you saved your money" and your response wasn't "it's not a scam", but rather "the scam isn't that expensive", which is a legendary and hilarious self-own.

-1

u/memesforbismarck Oct 01 '22 edited Oct 01 '22

I didnt wrote „its not a scam“ because I cant say if it is or not. I havent tested it yet and I am also not very invested in this topic.

Also I didnt knew if he meant scam because it might not work or because it is too expensive. To the second part I commented that it is cheaper than he stated (atleast where I live) so his statement might changed due to a lower price

Edit: for clarification, I didnt payed for the additional autopilot

0

u/KickAffsandTakeNames Oct 01 '22

So you paid 3500€ for something you don't have a use for, and you're not interested in? You literally just described the results of a scam.

Put down the shovel, my guy.

u/ProfessorBeer Oct 01 '22

I had a college buddy with like a 2006 Pontiac that had a HUD and I’ve been chasing that high ever since

106

u/lord_frost_ Oct 01 '22

OP's car seems like a Chevy Silverado. I think it's the only pickup with a HUD

Yup, cars have started implementing those. But just small scale ones for now. Volvo, Land Rover, etc have them.

10

u/iBTchip Oct 01 '22

Not only small scale brands, Mercedes, Audi, BMW have had them for years. You can even get them in certain Fords, Hondas, Toyotas and more.

2

u/tehrand0mz Oct 01 '22

Yep Lexus (Toyota's luxury brand) has HUD options on some of it's vehicles.

The Chevy Camaro ZL1 from about 10 years ago had a HUD option iirc.

3

u/OkDuckIt Oct 01 '22

Pontiac Grand Prix had a basic one.

1

u/19_ironman_74 Oct 01 '22

Our new Hyundai has it

1

u/Tje199 Oct 01 '22

Hyundai offers it too.

18

u/creditspread Oct 01 '22

Thanks! Have a trip coming up so I’ll try to request one of those models!

8

u/lord_frost_ Oct 01 '22

Cheers!

Have a great trip!

12

u/luckd0ut Oct 01 '22

Well played

6

u/lord_frost_ Oct 01 '22

Bored af, so figured I'd try to identify the car xD

The pickup symbol helped narrow a lot.

16

u/the_kessel_runner Oct 01 '22

My mom had some sort of Chevy car in the early 2000s with a heads up display. Although, back then, it was projected from the dashboard and reflected off the windshield and not actually integrated into the glass.

15

u/Kody_Z Oct 01 '22

I don't think these new versions are integrated into the glass, but I could be wrong

8

u/PC_Man18 R2-D2 Oct 01 '22

They’re not. There is a screen inside the dash below the reflection.

3

u/terminator_84 Oct 01 '22

Mine has a unit in the dash that projects on the glass. When it's raining it creates an optical illusion where the projection looks like it's in front of the nose of the car like a video game.

2

u/Nemo_Barbarossa Oct 01 '22

They usually have a small piece of glass set on top of the dash.

3

u/pamtar Oct 01 '22

My grandad had a Pontiac with HUD in the mid-90s. It’s been around a while

1

u/xthetruebeast Oct 01 '22

Yup. I had a 97 grand prix that had one

2

u/Unfriendly_Giraffe Oct 01 '22

Had a 2000 Vette that had one too.

1

u/SirSaltie Oct 01 '22

That's precisely how these work

1

u/Tromboneofsteel Qui-Gon Jinn Oct 01 '22

There was an early 2000's Lincoln or Buick that had a HUD too IIRC

3

u/Maester_erryk Oct 01 '22

Have a 2021 Ram 1500, bighorn (mid trim level), has a HUD, but not quite as much info as this one. Just shows speed and road you're on/GPS directions if you are using the truck's navigation.

2

u/BmoreRaven917 Oct 01 '22

If you have adaptive cruise control & lane keep, that shows on the HUD too.

3

u/TantalisingTurkey Oct 01 '22

New Ram 1500's have the option, it started with the Rebel TRX and is now available according to the website. I think it's a really cool piece of technology and kind of want one. You know, to make it feel like a SW ship lol.

2

u/terminator_84 Oct 01 '22

My BMW has one and honestly any future car I get will need it as well. GPS instructions, media options, speed and speed limits, incoming calls, all on the windshield.

1

u/Progmodsarecucks Oct 01 '22

My X3's HUD is maybe my favorite feature.

1

u/terminator_84 Oct 01 '22

It's my 2nd favorite feature. The first is the CD player that let's me rip albums to the internal hard drive lol.

1

u/RemtonJDulyak Imperial Oct 01 '22

Man, I've been talking about HUDs in car since the '90s, and all my friends told me I was nuts to think it...

4

u/mrcoffee83 Oct 01 '22

Just imagine a sat nav on your hud that tells you where to go

2

u/RemtonJDulyak Imperial Oct 01 '22

That's exactly the main application I was suggesting, like to the mini map in driving games!

1

u/3-DMan Oct 01 '22

The future is now!

1

u/dinosaursandsluts Oct 01 '22

They've been in Corvettes since about the early 2000s, I even had a friend in college with like a 1992 Oldsmobile that had one. They're not exactly new or rare

1

u/reckless150681 Oct 01 '22

Porsche has HUDs too! Obviously not pickups but still figured i throw in that brand

1

u/pauly13771377 Oct 01 '22

My fathers Civic from a years ago had one and my sisters Camery has one. You need to buy the top tier package for them but they aren't very rare.

1

u/BmoreRaven917 Oct 01 '22

My Ram has a HUD too.

1

u/MagicDartProductions Oct 01 '22

The new Tundra has a HUD on the higher trim levels.

1

u/3-DMan Oct 01 '22

Looks at 2010 Ford Focus

"You don't even have Bluetooth!"

1

u/saucyboi9000 Oct 01 '22

My stepmom's BMW X4 has one, and she turned it off literally the minute she got the car from the dealership.

1

u/Flipnkraut Oct 01 '22

Sierra, Tundra, probably others also have HUDs. HUDs are a pretty common feature in most brands these days. I’ve had HUDs in my cars since 2014.

2

u/JungleJesse Oct 01 '22

My '22 Toyota Camry Hybrid has it, as did my '19.

2

u/BB8_PeePeeTape Oct 01 '22

My 2011 Toyota has it too, you can buy them for $40 and it plugs into your cars OBD2 port

2

u/creditspread Oct 01 '22

OBD2

Correction: R2D2 port.

3

u/Devadander Oct 01 '22

Had a loner X3 within the past couple years, the HUD nav was awesome. Did a good job pointing to which lane you should be in etc

5

u/Andire Oct 01 '22 edited Oct 01 '22

They used to be more popular back in the day, but were relegated to a fad, since the tech then was like one of the ceiling projection alarm clocks and they'd put a piece of film a bit darker than the glass in place so you'd be able to see the projection. But yeah, think of those clock radio alarms that got popular in like the 2010's and it's the same shit.

6

u/_akrom Oct 01 '22

It looks like this has awesome information for off-road driving, if not as useful for the highway. If I could see my pitch and roll as well as traction of all four wheels on my outback without looking at my center screen when I am navigating a fire road, that would be sweet.

2

u/north7 Oct 01 '22

Test drove some Hyundais last year - the top trim levels had huds.

2

u/Sonatine__ Oct 01 '22

Cars have HUDs for 10 years now or something like that. The first modern HUD in a car came from BMW afaik.

1

u/Frosty_Claw Oct 01 '22

Post 2014 Arcadias have them I think

1

u/iLorax Oct 01 '22

My Mazda CX5 has a HUD. It’s awesome.

1

u/Max-Powah Oct 01 '22

My son's 2005 LeSabre has one. It was my dad's car. It is really handy.

1

u/Biobooster_40k Oct 01 '22

I remember a little over 10 yrs ago my Mom's boss had I think a Corvette which was was the first time I. Had seen anytime of HUD displayed on the window. Blew my mind.

1

u/creditspread Oct 01 '22

HUD: "Execute order 66."

Thanks for all the replies regarding the HUD! I truly never knew I was so behind on tech :).

0

u/IAmAddictedXOTWOD Oct 01 '22

Cars have had them for a while. Have an aunt that has a 2015 BMW X5 that came standard with one, I can only imagine they’ve been used for a few years prior to that.

Also, there are aftermarket solutions you can buy if you want one that sit on your dash, although I can’t speak for how well they work.

0

u/JustinHopewell Oct 01 '22

I have a HUD in my car. It's not on the windshield, but on a glass panel that rises up out of the dash. I still think it's super cool after a few years of driving the car.

3

u/leenponyd42 Oct 01 '22

How do people still not understand that parsec is a distance measurement and Hans comment wasn’t bragging about speed but about finding the shortest route for the run?

2

u/Leaflock Oct 02 '22

Especially when GL himself explains it on the Ep IV DVD commentary like 20 years ago.

9

u/luckd0ut Oct 01 '22

Lol well done. If you want all the details this picture was taken at Palmerado and Scripps Poway Parkway in San Diego

Porsche actually designed a ship for the sequels...

He-Lon's more the type to obliterate a planet for its resources for the greater good.

6

u/bobzilla Oct 01 '22

Is no one going to point out that a parsec is distance, not speed?

5

u/c4han Ahsoka Tano Oct 01 '22

Technically George used it as a measurement of time, not speed

1

u/Tabulatelk15 Darth Vader Oct 01 '22

Nah, that line was just misinterpreted (unless he said otherwise). You can easily take it as a distance, as he just took a shortcut (as shown in Solo).

1

u/c4han Ahsoka Tano Oct 01 '22

Come on. I’m down with the retcon, but there’s no ignoring that George was just mistaken.

You're in a star wars sub and don't know that it's been explained in universe already? Wat?

5

u/startana Oct 01 '22

Seriously, it was explained in universe literally decades ago, and then a version of that explanation was depicted in new canon in Solo. I feel like this SHOULD be common knowledge among Star Wars fans that both know what a parsec is, and are going out to interact with other Star Wars fans on Reddit, and yet, somehow, it doesn't seem to be.

1

u/HufflepuffHarry Rebel Oct 01 '22

It's phenomenal to experience the tesla ludicrous mode launch, if you ever get the chance never turn it down.

A Tesla with a reg plate referencing taking a load of toxic material from a slave driven mine is surprisingly on point.

Your car had a HUD ?

2

u/Brookie069 Oct 01 '22

They are not uncommon on newer higher end trim vehicles. I have a Mazda CX-5 with one as well. Nice for displaying the built in navigation on there.

1

u/rdrgl Oct 01 '22

Kessel Run in general is about distance mainly (taking the shortest but most dangerous path) although in the particular case of the Millennium Falcon, in Solo it was established in canon that the ship needed to be super fast to make it because they almost fall into a black hole.

-2

I always heard it was crappy growing up but apparently it’s turned around recently. It’s pretty expensive since it’s closer to SD (relative to similar homes in, say, North County) and according to a friend who works for the local government the city infrastructure is still shitty, but the city itself is nice enough, just … sort of an awkward middle ground between North County and SD proper sometimes.

0

u/Dileth Oct 01 '22
