This is really well said. I would pay, for nostalgia purposes, to be able to walk through a functioning video store again. The atmosphere was 2nd to none- the smell of Blockbusters in particular cling to my memory. Of course it also leads to reminiscing about Friday evenings watching movies and eating pizza with the family - and those memories are priceless. On a side note, I'm really curious to know if OP has a VHS copy of King of the Ring from nineteen ninety eight when the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcers table.

24

u/Itstoogoddamnhot12 8d ago edited 8d ago All-Seeing Upvote Narwhal Salute Wholesome Seal of Approval

Shittymorph would never admit to it, but I'm pretty fucking sure they're the same person.

Rogersimon stopped posting six years ago... Shittymorph's account was created 6 years ago. The writing style is VERY similar and they're the only two who, like the above commenter says, can fool people EVERY time with the EXACT same gimmick.

They've gotta be the same guy to my mind.

Edit: Reading through both of their comment histories, I'm almost dead certain. There's unmistakable similarities about specific aspects of their writing. They both use hyphens for dramatic pause a lot, they both tend to use the Oxford comma where a lot of people wouldn't, and they both rely heavily on quotation marks, almost never paraphrasing. Grammar and punctuation are always college-essay perfect and never use things like ellipses or double exclamation points.

They also both always post in a single paragraph with no indentation or separation, which is honestly probably the most telling signature. A lot or most people on reddit will hit shift + enter to space out their paragraphs when telling a longer story. Morph and rogersimon basically never do (because it buries the twist in text and makes it much harder to detect it's one of theirs at a glance).

u/shittymorph, anything you'd like to tell us?

There also weren't reviews and star ratings to deter your curiosity

74

u/mikefromearth 9d ago

You nailed it.

Pre-internet, you had very little idea of the quality of the movie before you rented it.

You'd get to rent all the new movies of course, but you could also browse the rest, looking at the cool covers and names, and pick something at random without having a clue if it was going to be good or bad or somewhere in between.

I know these days, I really only look for movies with good ratings. It's kinda sad tbh. I wish I didn't have that hang-up because there are tons of lower-rated movies I've enjoyed in the past.

No, we left L.A. (where we’re from) to raise a family in a much more affordable area. The housing in L.A. at the time was HIGH dollar for low square footage (it’s worse now). We moved to the South and were able to get something very affordable in an area that was under-developed (it’s now a booming town) but I’ve always wanted a basement to do something creatively-fun that I could share with my family and friends, while also using it as a set to shoot projects; which is understandably lost on some here ~ as they think it’s just a vanity place for me to lie on the floor and do VHS Angels with my tapes 🤣🤷🏻‍♂️

I saw the VHS covers so I assumed they might actually be inside, just wondered if they still were, or if you replaced them with BluRays.

I cannot even recall someone having Laserdisc, I always assumed it was an early name for DVD.

The only (and I really mean that you are very close to perfection) thing I could maybe improved is to get a retro-style fridge for the kitchen and some popcorn machine (I might have missed that one). But man, I can feel the amount of love and dedication that went into that project.

Well done!!!

I went to this rich-girl's 7th or 8th bday when I was a kid, and after 15 or so of us got finished swimming in their INDOOR BASEMENT POOL, mom whipped out a movie for us to watch, with popcorn, and it was LASERDISC.

This was mid-eighties. Me and my friends were in absolute awe

That’s some John Mulaney ‘This is the height of luxury’ childhood, god damn.

Laserdisk was popular in Japan for Anime because of its better picture quality over VHS and it was a format for upperclass videophiles here in the states. It wasn’t popular, but definitely had its niche. The format lived on well into the 90’s.

You mean DVD's replaced laserdisc.

I had one. Laserdiscs were expensive as were the players. But they offered things like director's commentaries on secondary audio tracks which was a first.

Picture quality-wise they were a big step up from VHS and just below that of DVD's:

LaserDisc comes with a horizontal resolution of 425 lines (NTSC) and 440 lines (PAL)

DVDs have 480 lines of resolution for the NTSC and 576 lines for PAL

We had a Laser Disc player and a CED player growing up. Using the CED player was fun as a kid.

Only in the last few years have I learned how few people my age know about either of them. They were like the Sega Saturn. It came and went and nobody noticed cuz they were busy playing PlayStation.

I only ever saw laser discs in elementary school. I remember watching science programs on them. Early - mid 90s.

Damn, my family had hundreds and hundreds of VHS until last year when we finally convinced my dad to donate them to Goodwill.

If only we could've sent them to you! Looks fantastic!

Still keep my old video store membership in my wallet. This is awesome. Well done man! Expect a lot of friend visits I bet.

How much did this cost? I can only imagine the expendable income you have to be able to afford this. Cool tho nonetheless

I wish every DIY post came with the price tag as well just to help accurately set expectations for all us viewers

I just have to ask. Is that a Mondo Burger (Good Burger fr. Kenan & Kel) reference?

Awesome work, BTW!

229

u/Snfuboop 9d ago

Lots of inspiration in the title: the Mondo sub-genre from the ‘60s/‘70s - the video store that Parker Lewis’ parents owned from ‘Parker Lewis Can’t Lose’ called ‘Mondo Video’, John Waters’ ‘Mondo Trasho’ and more. 🍻💥📼

u/Snfuboop 9d ago

Hahaa - I can’t tell you how many comments I got that were exactly that. Like really angry comments! 🤷🏻‍♂️

And deal! 📼🍻💥

u/DistastefulTruth 9d ago

A real nerd would be angry at a widescreen flat TV used for a 4:3 tube tv format. Does that thing even have a S video input? Now if anyone needs me, I'll be in my angry dome.

Please fully water proof your basement walls and door seals. It’d be a Shakespearean tragedy to lose all that hard work and man hours of collecting to a flood hazard. I know I would cry…

Dude! I was a young mall-rat growing up in the 90s. The video store was one of my favorite places to go and kill time. Thanks for the dose of nostalgia and good work!

12

u/lloyddobbler 9d ago

...so my parents opened a video rental store in 1988. So many similar things - from the "Big Shots" and "Adventures in Babysitting" posters to the "Adults Only" section with the saloon doors. So much of this is spot-on, era-specific to the exact timeframe when I spent every day after school in a video store. (Only ours had fewer neon lights).

Bravo. (Also saw the #atl hashtag - you in Atlanta? Their stores were in Griffin and Fayetteville, incidentally.)
