u/teknonhatheou 8d ago edited 7d ago

(About losing his car, not creepo stuff): My youth pastor’s husband, when I was a kid did this and lost his car down this hill that ends in a wooded gulch(?). It ended up in a tree, if I remember correctly (a tree growing out of the floor of the “gulch” or very large naturally formed ditch).

Dude was known for his short fuse and foul mouth (but he was awesome, super funny and really smart), but that happened and he was just quiet. Freaked me out so much more.

Edit: to add: he taught Latin and looked like it (nerdy prof/teacher), which made his inner rage beast much more paradoxical.

Anton Welchin, who acted in Odd Thomas, was killed by his jeep because it slipped out of park and pinned him to a pillar outside of his house. He was only 27 years old.

28

u/muklan 8d ago

Odd Thomas? You oughta put some respect on Ensign Chekhov's name, now.

5

u/montanagunnut 8d ago

42

u/zannus 8d ago

He never shifted it to park, it was believed he thought the dial shifter had went all the way, but had stopped a neutral. Part of the reason why all Chrysler products now auto shift to park when the door is opened.

Was such a sad loss of such a talented young actor.

27

u/Brilliant_Buy6052 8d ago

Chrysler literally had a recall on those Jeep’s because it was known they wouldn’t fully engage park or had problems slipping out of park. Also his parents settled out of court with Chrysler/jeep… why would they settle if it was his own fault?

18

u/nick99990 8d ago

It was bad design on the T shifters. Not a rotary dial.

The T shifters would, when let go, return to a neutral position. They essentially acted like a sequential shifter in a race car. There was little feedback outside of the display in the dash and that is what resulted in the easy mistake of shifting into the wrong gear.

The settlement was because there was not reasonable effort to avoid the problem and a reasonable person could be seen to make the mistake.

The auto-park being applied to everything is just them covering their ass with all digital shifters.

6

u/zannus 8d ago

Did not know his model had a more traditional style shifter, but regardless still Chrysler's fault

3

u/heili 8d ago

This is the absolutely abysmal shifter design that killed Anton Yelchin:

I always set my parking brake no matter what. I don’t care if it’s flat ground I’m setting it just because.

7

u/burtoncummings 8d ago

It was a manufacturing issue that forced a recall.

Funnily enough, I just watched a Family Guy rerun last night where Brian is looking up to see if his Jeep's for sale.

Baader-Meinhoff?

6

u/thegrlwiththesqurl 8d ago

*Yelchin. I get so sad any time I see him in something, he was really talented.

3

u/stairme 8d ago

I had this kind of Jeep at the time this happened, and know exactly how it happened. Jeep ended up doing a recall to fix it. I was going to do a YouTube showing how he died, but never did.

It was, unfortunately, way too easy to think you had it in park, but it was actually in reverse. I had it happen multiple times before I started being very, very deliberate about ensuring it was actually in park.

Otherwise great vehicle. I traded mine in for a GMC Acadia Denali and plan to go back to a Jeep Grand Cherokee at the end of the year.

A helpful trick is to leave the tires turned toward the curb. That way if you do forget the park brake, it will roll toward the curb and ideally stop.

First time cat owner. I treat them like dogs and wrestle with them and pick them up like babies. They seem to like it most of the time but I do back off when one of them gets kind of bitey

45

u/TerrorByte 8d ago edited 8d ago

Yeah, cats respond to that as well.

They get scared easily so you have to be gentle. And if you show pain when they get bitey, they'll usually learn it's too much and means end of playtime. Just like dogs in that sense.

Edit: Some cats are jerks, no doubt

65

u/TellTaleTank 8d ago

My cat sees displays of pain as weakness and goes for the kill.

Honestly the bites likely won't ever break skin, mine doesn't it's his claws that do damage when he gets overly enthusiastic. I ward him off, not hit, never, with a pillow. Sometimes I use a towel like a bullfighter would, I dont think he means to hurt me at all but his claws are sharp AF.

As a cat owner, this is when you stare them down and assert dominance. Gotta love em and set boundaries. They'll test them from time to time, but getting consistent responses to right and wrong actions helps them feel secure. They understand the environment. Pets that don't get consistency become neurotic, because they're never sure what will make you angry.

If they do something really bad, chase them down, get them on their back, and blow in their face a few times which registers as a hiss. Then let em go. If you can't catch them, then at least make sure they know you're annoyed at them, not the other way around.

Had to do this to my boys a couple times when they were little, but they get it now and only push things every couple of months or so to check if the rules still apply. Otherwise they're super sweet, snuggly, and happy.

13

u/BSdawg 8d ago

My dads cat is friendly but if you touch her she usually goes for a whack or a bite. It’s been a lot better since I brought my dog over, I think she feels safer around her or just likes having company. But she will go at my dog whenever she can. She likes to walk between your legs and meow for food and occasionally she’ll literally just attack your legs for no reason while doing it. I read that they can be reactive to being petted even if they like it so I think this is what’s happening.

Whenever she does attack, I just grab her quickly and push her on her back and hold her down for a few seconds. She calms down instantly. As soon as she calms down, she lets me pet her. You won’t dominate me Bandit, ya little bitch.

u/Different-Incident-2 8d ago

Is this aggressive behavior or playing? I'm guessing playing

163

u/x_v_b 8d ago

Playing. Ears are up, nobody's puffed, no yowling. I can't see the tails but I don't think they're doing sword-tail (that's when they whip their tails hard, it's to distract).

Note that when big boy pushes wee boy down, he doesn't actually bite him and he's using his paw pad, not his claws.

They're playing. This isn't a real fight.

47

u/PriorEnvironmental65 8d ago edited 8d ago

Yes playing, but also the older teaching the younger. Guess he just got schooled by the student. Lessons learnt all round.

15

u/x_v_b 8d ago

9

u/Samsonis 8d ago edited 8d ago

Eye contact is so underrated wen dealing with cats. You can greet your cat from a cros the room just with eyecontact in a few seconds.Cats rather have a mexican stand off then fight with their fluffy paws ans face. The older cat isnt that worried so just glanses the room after the red one breaks eyecontact, its that subtle.

9

u/SereneBabe0312 8d ago

My cat will give me love blinks from across the room, but I can tell when he's mad, because his glare legitimately scares me now. There's a hint of evil in it, I think.

183

u/PossiblyWithout 8d ago

Larger cats do this for dominance. Though my cats act like this and the little guy cant learn a lesson for the life of him. He will actively pursue my larger one even if she’s growling at him

70

u/IntoTheWildLife 8d ago

Why do they do this? I have a 9 year old cat and a new one that’s a few months. The smaller one will continue chasing my huge tomcat even though he’s hissing, growling and getting angry! I have to put them in separate rooms for a while! 😩

66

u/Cultural_Two_8630 8d ago

Normally the young ones want to play, my kitty is always chasing the older car in the house and it annoys the older cat abit but she never hisses or growl at the kitten. You just need to let them get used to each other

24

u/IntoTheWildLife 8d ago

Yea they are together all day every day but when the younger one won’t take the hint from the older one I have to separate them for a bit. My older cat has stress issues that he’s on a medicated diet for and stuff so I want to make sure he isn’t getting too aggressive. Also don’t want the younger one getting injured cause he really doesn’t know when to quit! He is a real bully 🤣

16

u/cordell507 8d ago

Try to play with the little one a few times a day until he's tired out.

u/Nitero 8d ago

Pretty standard, I have two right now and it can get like that sometimes. The younger cats have a higher sense of “play aggressiveness” (just made that term up) and don’t seem to cut it off at the appropriate time (according to the bigger cat). Generally this happens with mine because the older cat is a bit more dramatic and also the younger cat is really long and is becoming stronger and able to hold his own, then the older cat doesn’t like that game and doesn’t want to play… this is the drama in my life… not too bad lol

u/IntoTheWildLife 8d ago

7

u/PM_YOUR_ISSUES 8d ago

Usually they are just attempting to play. And growling plus hissing doesn't always mean that the older cat is getting angry or annoyed at the other ones. One of my cats growls and hisses constantly while she plays. Often she'll be the one to start trying to play with the other cat, but she still just hisses and growls while they are jumping around each other and play fighting.

She's just grouchy in general though. She'll also steal a person's seat, growl and hiss and them when they pick her up, then immediately lay in the person's lap and start purring. Sometimes cats just wanna scream.

3

u/IntoTheWildLife 8d ago

My older cat has been with me for 8 years. He’s very temperamental. Always was. I’m the only one who can touch him. He gets mad at everyone else 🤣

3

u/Unhelpful_Kitsune 8d ago

My cats have a similar size difference, but not quite as extreme. Bagheera is also a void and about 14 lbs., Monster is about 7-8 lbs. and she’s toothless.

Monster will jump on Bagheera’s face, somehow get behind his head, put him in a headlock and bunny kick the back of his head. Sometimes he’ll just be chillin, laying on the floor, and Monster will come running from somewhere to tackle him. She needs the running start to get him. It’s fantastic to watch.

Especially because she never played with him before she was diagnosed with stomatitis and just in chronic pain. Watching her giant personality blossom again after she got her teeth pulled and her pain decreased to presumably manageable levels has made me so happy for her.

Name the black cat Russia and the small one Ukraine, and this is pretty much what's happening right now on the world stage.

It's not about the size of the cat in the dog. It's about the size of the dog in the CAT.
