Don't know much about history

Don't know much biology

Don't know much about a science book

Don't know much about the French I took

But I do know that I love you

And I know that if you love me, too

What a wonderful world this would be

121

I love singing this and then immediately segueing into The Shirelle's:

Mama said there'd be days like this

There'd be days like this, my mama said.

The tune is pretty much identical, so you can slip back and forth between the two songs.

For those who are ignorant of where this is from, it's What a Wonderful World by Sam Cooke

Sam Cooke AKA The King of Soul. Amazing voice, and his song A Change is Gonna Come became an anthem of the civil rights movement. It's much more powerful because he was in all likelihood murdered by two white cops for his involvement in the civil rights movement.

He has a beautiful discography and an interesting life, I would recommend taking the time to look into him as a musician and as a person.

A tragic but beautiful life. He wasn't perfect by any stretch but there's a reason sam is so vividly remembered by those who knew him and the reason he's inspired so many soul/r&b musicians. One of the most underrated vocalists of all time. He's personally one of my favorite artists. What an impact he could have had if he had lived past his early 30s.

I'm also very happy to see any Sam Cooke reference online. It's rare but I really appreciate it every time.

5

u/dollarwaitingonadime 8d ago

I’m as big a Sam fan as you are likely to find. I’m also no police apologist, and mourn his voice for the causes to which you allude and which he righteously supported.

But Sam got shot because he was kicking in the door of a hotel manager. Which he was doing because the girl he was trying to assault took his pants and locked him out of the room. He was shot by a small woman in the wee hours at a seedy motel, not the cops.

Edit: to be clear he is the GOAT soul singer, period, and his life is absolutely worth the research. Dream Boogie is a great start.

4

I remember using those, good times. But I was thinking more of a solution you actually want to separate into phases, like urine for example. Where you want to discard the precipitate and keep the pellet for analysis under a microscope, but I´m rambling now.

Tan and Chen are lacking in the love department

784

u/OreganoJefferson 9d ago

Surprisingly they're also married they just kept their last names

274

u/rudolphrednose25 9d ago

Tan and Chen aren't even that far from being different surnames, they have the same origin, or rather, the same surname pronounced differently

119

u/PuckNutty 9d ago

So like O'Reardon and O'Riordan are pronounced the same but spelled differently?

222

u/rudolphrednose25 9d ago

Kind of. It's more like Miller and Müller, where the names are the same in meaning, but slightly different in pronunciation and spelling due to language differences.

Chen and Tan are both written as 陈/陳 (chén). Chen is standard Mandarin, but Tan is the Hokkien/Teochew dialect equivalent.

Chen and Tan are their surname.

And fun fact, Chen and Tan are the exact same surname, just that the former is a Cantonese pronunciation and the other with Hokkien pronunciation. (陳/陈)

Someone saying they were already engaged and met at Uni. He graduated with them, one of the writers was a professor, wasn't sure who the last one was. His source was a link to an image of the three of them from Uni. Which linked to an "I made this shit up" image.

11

u/DeltyOverDreams 9d ago

They made a pretty long comment about who these people were, implying that they knew them personally.

At the end of the comment there was a link, which (according to the OP) lead to their photo with book authors, but instead, when you clicked on it, this link redirected you to the website in which the only thing you could read was that actually this whole story was made up.

Same difference, really.

7

u/jozaud 9d ago

Except that the textbook says it covers material for “G.C.E. ‘O’ Level” which is a standardized test in the UK, so why would they have written it at MIT in Massachusetts?

3

u/RedstripeRhapsodyHP 9d ago

Must be an old textbook too.

Fun fact: scientists get together all the time. In grad school, you end up spending so much time writing and in the lab it can be hard to meet any non-scientists.

Grad students marry so often that Universities set aside some faculty jobs specifically so they can hire new professors as married pairs (sometimes called a spousal appointment.)

23

u/DefiledDemon 9d ago

My grad program (around 40-50 in a cohort) usually had about 5 relationships that ended up in marriage, usually after graduation. And I can understand why; we were together for probably 50-60 hours a week for classes and projects.

My cohort was the first cohort in history to have 0 relationships and marriages are still at 0. It was weird because my male friend and I were relentlessly teased in hopes we'd end up in a relationship so that the line wasn't broken (there was a joke that it would curse the program forever). It never happened. He was in the closet due to his highly homophobic parents and was wanting a "lavender marriage" with a woman in a similar situation as himself.

Almost all the professors who made up the core of the program left after my cohort and it's gone a bit downhill. So I actually think the curse was real (jk)

Yea, guilty here.

I mean you throw a bunch of nerdy 20 something year olds with shared interests into a lab all day and something is bound to happen!

9

u/not_the_settings 8d ago

The women students in the math department fuckkkkked and banged all day long.

You have to imagine: bullied and ostracized during high school. Then you put hundreds of like-minded hormone fuelled 19 and 20 somethings together. For the first time they are not part of the out group.

That devolved to a ton of fucking and fwbs and high school esque relationship drama with our math (and natural science) students.

And don't get me wrong. Everybody fucks on campus. But none as much as the nerdy departments.

u/jKherty 8d ago

Amazing to learn that anyone is still doing GCE 'O' levels! These look like recent books. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GCE_Ordinary_Level_(United_Kingdom) But according to that link it's still used in a few places, TIL.

By 2027-2028, O-levels will be phased out and be replaced with a new National examination standard.

Emily later left John for Tan. John was so upset he let Tan buy him out of the company for a mere $5k. John later remarried but had a lot of animosity about the whole thing and never really forgave either of them. The company went on to publish tons of chemistry books among other things. It became a billion dollar company. John remarried and had a couple kids. Went back to his roots and taught high school chemistry until his cancer diagnosis. With certain death looming over him and a family to provide for, he did what any self respecting chemist would, with the help of a very street wise former student he became a methamphetamine manufacturer and eventually a king pin. He was later killed while trying to ambush a biker gang who had stolen his money. I think they made a show about this.

Edit:spelling

I remember when I found out about chemistry It was a long, long way from here

I was old enough to want it but younger than I wanted to be

Suddenly my mission was clear

So for awhile I conducted experiments

And I was amazed by the things I learned

From a fine fine girl with nothing but good intentions

and a bad tendency to get burned

All about chemistry

Won't you show me everything you know

Ah wonder what you do to me

Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, oh
